Is There a Correct Age to Start BOTOX?

If it seems as though anti-aging products are appealing to much younger generations these days, it’s not all in your head. In fact, with social media influencers sharing product demos and reviews for lotions, potions and serums at ages as young as 10 years old, there’s definitely been a seismic shift in who these items are being marketed to. But what about BOTOX? Although this safe, effective cosmetic injectable has been relied on for decades to reduce wrinkles, patients can’t even begin injections until they’re at least 18, begging the question, when should you start BOTOX? Here’s a closer look at this dynamic treatment, and when it’s truly a good time to begin.

What is BOTOX?

BOTOX is the brand name for a purified protein that is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It is used in a variety of treatments ranging from cosmetic to medical. For aesthetics, it can relax the tensed muscles of the face, smoothing wrinkles for up to six months. It can also be injected for medical applications, such as hyperhidrosis (excess sweating) and even to treat migraines.

Who is a Good Candidate for BOTOX?

BOTOX is an ideal treatment for anyone who has begun developing fine lines and wrinkles in the face.  If you are at least 18 years old and have begun noticing signs of aging around the eyes, mouth, nose, and forehead, you are likely a good candidate.

When Should I Start BOTOX?

Although the minimum age to begin BOTOX is 18, many patients find that their skin is firm enough at that age that they don’t need injections just yet. However, in recent years, patients in their early 20s have begun treatment to prevent beginning lines from worsening. A good rule of thumb to abide by is to start injecting lines once they start lingering after your face returns to its resting position.

What Happens if I Stop BOTOX?

The good news is that while BOTOX is a temporary fix, it does slow the progression of wrinkles, even if you stop. Better still, there are no known adverse effects of discontinuing treatment. Yes, your wrinkles will likely reappear once your body completely metabolizes the BOTOX, but they won’t be worse and should take longer to deepen once they finally do return.

Remember, while BOTOX is recommended for patients 18 and older, there’s no right or wrong age to start. In fact, the earlier you begin, the sooner you can fight off the onset of fine lines and facial wrinkles, helping you to look younger, longer.
